A San Diego electrical contractor specializing in EV charger installations and electrical panel upgrades — built on licensed, permitted, do-it-right work.

Our story

Why we started Altrara Electric

Altrara Electric is a San Diego–based electrical contractor specializing in EV charger installations and electrical panel upgrades. With over a decade of hands-on electrical experience, a C-10 contractor's license, and an engineering background spanning AI and Signals & Systems, we started Altrara Electric because we saw too many homeowners getting burned by unlicensed contractors and faceless referral services that compete on price instead of quality.

We believe that when you're adding a 50-amp circuit to your home — the biggest sustained electrical load most houses will ever see — you deserve a licensed electrician who pulls permits, does the math, and stands behind the work. That's what Altrara Electric delivers on every job.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does an EV charger installation cost in San Diego?+

Most residential Level 2 EV charger installations in San Diego range from $800 to $4,000, depending on your home's electrical setup, how far the charger is from your panel, and how fast you want to charge. If you need a panel upgrade (common in homes built before 2000), the total typically runs $4,000 to $8,000 including the upgrade. Every home is different, which is why our assessments are free.

Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?+

Maybe. A Level 2 charger requires a 24–80 amp dedicated circuit, depending on the charger. If your home has a 100-amp panel (standard in San Diego homes from the 1980s and 90s), it may not handle the extra load safely. We perform a load calculation to determine whether your current panel has capacity or whether a 200-amp upgrade is needed.

What EV chargers do you install?+

We install all major Level 2 chargers, including the Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3 & 4), Tesla Universal Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, Grizzl-E, JuiceBox, Emporia, and Wallbox Pulsar Plus. We can hardwire the unit or install a NEMA 14-50 outlet that works with any portable charger.

Are you licensed and insured?+

Yes. Altrara Electric holds a C-10 electrical contractor's license and carries full general liability and workers' compensation insurance. We can provide proof on request.

Do you pull permits and handle inspections?+

Always. Every EV charger install and panel upgrade requires a permit in San Diego. We handle the paperwork, coordinate SDG&E where needed, schedule the city inspection, and make sure everything passes the first time.

How long does an EV charger installation take?+

A straightforward home charger install is usually done in a few hours. If it includes a panel or service upgrade, plan for most of a day. We give you a realistic timeline in your written quote before any work begins.

What areas do you serve?+

We serve San Diego and surrounding communities throughout San Diego County — from Carmel Valley, La Jolla, and Del Mar to Poway, Chula Vista, and El Cajon. If you're nearby and don't see your area listed, give us a call.
